This community is a place for mask-makers to showcase their wonderful works of art that have a darker side to them.
Horror/macabre-style masks, BDSM/Fetish wear/masks, creatively modified gas masks, fantasy, masquerade, drama, comedy, theatrical, expressive, etc.; anything somber, gory, or dark, may be accepted as long as it is creative and not store purchased. If it IS store purchased/pre-fabricated it has to be heavily modified to become a new creative work, not easily mistaken for the original

ooh. Ive always wanted to make masks. I could never find a teaching aid for it though. very cool!
It's hard to find a teaching aid because there are so many things to make masks out of. I don't know of any one place that has them all listed. You could always ask other artisans, that's what I did in the begining 
thats an excellent idea, but i dont know many mask artisans. i know one way is with papier mache, but i never got to try it before myself. i know ill eventually do it! i just have to experiment. but they are probably made out of plaster or wood as well? im not sure.

I myself have made masks from leather, paper mache, plaster, plastic, cloth etc.
I have seen others make them from old gas masks, neoprene, laytex, metal, and one ingenious fellow made some from wire coat hangers, with fiberglass cloth sewn to it, covered then in resin fiberglass, covered then in car bondo, with various wood and metal bits.
If you ever have a question feel free to ask me, or send a very politely worded note to an artist whos mask you admire and they will usually tell you what its made of.
